New Olympus Patents Show Continued Stabilization Development

We know Olympus has previously revealed a patent that features a Panasonic-esque Dual IS like technology. The latest round of patents show continued development with stabilization, among other things. The following abstracts are fairly technical, feel free to click-through the links for more details and images.

With the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II already rumored to have 4k and a handheld high resolution mode, it will be interesting to see if they can improve their IBIS or add Dual IS. We’ll see later this year!

Latest Olympus Patents Roundup:

Imaging Apparatus Having Camera Shake Correction Device: An imaging apparatus includes a first vibration isolation control unit configured to control a first vibration isolation unit that corrects camera shake by moving an imaging element, a second vibration isolation control unit configured to control a second vibration isolation unit that corrects camera shake by moving a lens, and a setting unit configured to conduct setting of which of the first vibration isolation unit and the second vibration isolation unit is to be used for which of the camera shake correction and the moving of the photographic range.

Image Blur Correction Apparatus and Imaging Apparatus: An image blur correction apparatus includes: a blur correction actuator that corrects image blur by moving a lens or by moving an image sensor; a shake detection unit that detects a postural change amount of the imaging apparatus; a storing unit that stores three or more postural change amounts detected at different times; an estimating unit that calculates an estimate of a postural change amount after a predetermined time period on the basis of the three or more postural change amounts and on the basis of an approximation based on a temporal change in the postural change amounts; a blur amount calculating unit that calculates an image blur amount on the basis of the estimate; and a driving control unit that calculates a movement amount of a lens or image sensor to be moved by the blur correction actuator on the basis of the image blur amount.

Shutter Holding Mechanism: A shutter holding mechanism includes: a shutter substrate which is provided inside a camera body and in which a focal-plane type shutter unit is fixed; a pressing unit arranged between the camera body and a side of one end portion of the shutter substrate, the pressing unit pressing the shutter substrate to a side of another end portion of the shutter substrate relative to the camera body; and a damper unit arranged in a part on a side of the camera body corresponding to the side of the other end portion of the shutter substrate, which is a side opposite to a part where the pressing unit is arranged, in a direction along a travel direction of a shutter blade of the shutter unit, the damper unit absorbing movement of the shutter substrate pressed by the pressing unit.

Lens Barrel, Imaging Device and Part of Lens Barrel: A lens barrel is provided that accommodates an optical member including a lens so as to be movable in an optical axis direction. The lens barrel includes a first part that is molded from a resin material in which an additive with a friction-reducing property is added to a base resin, and thereby the additive is exposed on the surface of the base resin. The first part moves along with the movement of the optical member in the optical axis direction. The lens barrel also includes a second part that comes into contact with the first part, and slides relative to a surface of the first part on which the additive is exposed along with the movement of the optical member moves in the optical axis direction.
